Inchicore

Inchicore John Rooney

Inchicore, situated in Dublin 8, is a neighborhood rich in history and community, boasting a vibrant sporting heritage, iconic landmarks, and strong ties to the rail industry.

Take in a visit to Richmond barracks, originally built as a British army barracks and later a focal point and site of detention for those involved in the war of independence and rebellion of 1916. Now wonderfully restored as a centre for many cultural events, they provide walking tours, history talks and other community activities. Across the way lies Goldenbridge cemetery which was opened in 1828 by Daniel O’Connell and the Dublin Cemeteries Committee. This serene Victorian garden cemetery was restored in 2017. It is dominated by beautiful mature trees and a large central monument, providing a distinctly peaceful atmosphere and place of reflection.

The area of Inchicore has had many sporting links throughout the years. An All Ireland finals were held here in 1889 when Tipperary beat Laois in football and Dublin defeated Clare in hurling. In soccer, Richmond Park is the home of League of Ireland club St. Patrick’s Athletic, founded in 1929, which has left an indelible mark on the area's sporting identity. The football legend Paul McGrath earned his famous title ‘The Black Pearl of Inchicore’ from his time playing for St Pat’s. One of the greatest camogie players Katherine “Kay” Mills was born in South Square. She won an incredible 15 All Ireland camogie titles with Dublin.

Historical landmarks such as the Inchicore Railway Works, dating back to the mid-19th century, stand as testaments to the neighborhood's industrial past and its crucial connection to Ireland's railway infrastructure. These works played a significant role in shaping the community and fostering economic development in the area.

Inchicore has a vibrant social community and nightlife. Rascals Brewing Co opened up shop in 2014, offering craft beers, brewery tours, events and mini-festivals while serving up some of Dublin’s best pizza. Right next door, you can find Stillgarden Distillery, a multi award winning, independent distillery and visitor centre, which opened in the area in 2019. Stillgarden has an environmental and community driven approach in what they do, and is home to the social botanists community project.

Today, Inchicore remains a bustling hub, blending its rich history with modern amenities and vibrant community spirit.
