The Tenters Story Exhibition with The Tenters Celebrated Heritage Group

in The Liberties Suite at Aloft Dublin City

Upon entering 'The Tenters Story' Exhibition, the attendee will be treated to exhibits showing material related to the layers of history associated with the Tenters area. As they make their way through the exhibition they will also find the answers to questions about this neighbourhood such as...

Why is it called the Tenters? What are the origins of community? What is the Fairbrother's Fields Housing Scheme and where doess it fit into the overrall Tenters area? When, why and how did this neighbourhood become the successful one that it is today? The threads of the past, present and future of the Tenters area are so connected and truly worth sharing. This is the idea behind organizing this event.

In 2022, we celebrated the centenary of the Tenters and as a result, the sense of community in the Tenters has gone from strength to strength. This exhibition will delve into various timelines over the last century including the Emergency Years and how that affected the residents living here at that time. We will also remember some of the local shops that served the neighbourhood over the years and hear and see material relating to the personal stories of some of the families living in the Tenters area.

This year we will see the release of the 1926 Census of Ireland. For the first time the entire Tenters neighbourhood will feature in a Census as the Fairbrother's Fields housing scheme was only completed in 1924. From the 18th of April 2026, we will have the first opportunity to discover a comprehensive list of residents living here in 1926.

"Songlines of the City is a way of looking at Dublin 8 as a Living Archive. A place shaped not only by streets and building but by memory, feeling, rhythm and human connection". This Tenters Story exhibition has all of these elements contained within it. This Exhibition has been organised by members of The Tenters Celebrated Heritage Group. All of our members have a direct connection with the Tenters area and our sense of pride in our place is stronly evident in this exhibition. We want to share the story of the Tenters and help people connect and reconnect using the threads of our precious community.
