Smock Alley Graded d8

Smock Alley Theatre

Smock Alley Theatre is nestled on the banks of the Liffey and you would be forgiven for thinking it a quiet little building.

Originally built in 1662, The Theatre Royal at Smock Alley was the beating heart of Dublin City. It was where Dubliners flocked for their cultural fix. 300 people would attend each night. People from across all societal classes and creeds attended to be enthralled, entertained, and enlightened by entertainers of all kinds.

Within the walls of the modern Smock Alley you will find two theatres, a unique Banquet Hall, space for creativity, and programmes for artist development. The theatre is now a vital resource within the ecology of Irish theatre, supporting artists, companies and festivals.

Every year it welcomes around 50,000 people through the doors. In an average year the theatre presents over 650 individual performances, scores of commercial events and over 30 weddings.

The annual Scene & Heard festival presents over 100 pieces of new work involving hundreds of artists across multiple disciplines.
