Culture Date with Dublin 8 Launches 5 Year Strategic Plan

Dublin City Council today (28.01.26) launches the Culture Date with Dublin 8 Strategic Plan 2025–2030 at Christ Church Cathedral, outlining a clear vision for expanding cultural participation and strengthening the cultural profile of Dublin 8. The launch brings together programme partners, community organisations, cultural institutions, artists, and civic stakeholders from across the neighbourhood.

The Council-led initiative has grown significantly since 2017, evolving from a two-day pilot into a major week-long festival involving more than 100 partners and attracting tens of thousands of participants. The new strategy sets out the next phase of development, focusing on inclusive programming, partnership building, placemaking, and reinforcing Dublin 8 as one of the city’s most vibrant cultural districts.

Culture Date with Dublin 8
now delivers hundreds of free and low-cost events annually across museums, heritage sites, libraries, parks, arts spaces, and community venues. Alongside its flagship festival, year-round projects such as the Dublin 8 Cultural Attractions Map and Passport, the Discover Dublin 8 online hub, and the Faces Behind D8 series continue to promote engagement with the area’s cultural assets.

Speaking at the launch, the Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Ray McAdam, said:

“Culture Date with Dublin 8 demonstrated the important role that culture played in strengthening communities, enhancing quality of life, and supporting placemaking at a local level. This five-year strategy provided a clear and ambitious roadmap for the continued development of the initiative, rooted in partnership, accessibility, and shared civic pride. Dublin City Council was proud to support work that connected people with place and celebrated the rich cultural life of our neighbourhoods.”

The strategy aligns with the objectives of the Dublin City Development Plan and Dublin City Council’s Cultural Strategy, with priorities including strengthening the district within the city delivery capacity, supporting inclusive and accessible programming, deepening partnerships, and enhancing the identity and visibility of Dublin 8 as a vibrant cultural district. Together, these alignments position Culture Date with Dublin 8 as an example of integrated, community-centred cultural practice, demonstrating how heritage, creativity, and people can come together to support a vibrant, connected, and resilient cultural district within the city.

Bevin Herbert, Area Manager, Dublin City Council South Central Area
, speaking at the event, said,

“Culture Date with Dublin 8 has become an integral part of cultural life in the South Central Area. This strategy reflects the collaborative effort of partners, communities, and stakeholders, and sets out a sustainable approach to strengthening cultural participation and shared ownership in the years ahead. Through continued partnership and investment, the initiative will support vibrant, inclusive, and connected communities across Dublin 8.”

The Strategic Plan 2025–2030 was developed through a participatory process involving audience research, stakeholder workshops, and consultation with community, cultural, and commercial partners, ensuring that local voices and lived experience remain central to its future direction.
