OPW Walking Tour of the Irish National War Memorial Gardens

Office of Public Works (OPW

The gardens, located in Islandbridge, are one of the most famous memorial gardens in Europe. They are dedicated to the memory of the 49,400 Irish soldiers who died in the First World War (1914-1918). The name of each soldier is contained in the illustrated Harry Clarke manuscripts in the granite book rooms within the gardens.

These gardens are not only a place of remembrance, they are also of great architectural interest as the renowned Architect Sir Edwin Lutyens designed them. Lutyens was a prolific garden designer and architect whose other Irish designs include Heywood Gardens, Lambay Island and those in Howth Castle.

The gardens boasts many features such as the Gertrude Jekyll inspired herbaceous borders which encircle the sunken rose gardens creating a serene atmosphere which will make for an enjoyable visit during any season.
