The Story in the Woven

The Story in the Woven is a collaboration between The Liberties Weavers, a group dedicated to reviving and celebrating the weaving traditions of Dublin 8, and NCAD student Ali Ward. Rooted in the historical and social fabric of the area, The Story in The Woven explores weaving as both a practical skill and a metaphor for community, memory, and shared histories. The exhibition functions as a living archive, preserving and amplifying the voices of those engaged in textile work while situating craft within broader feminist narratives.

Through engagement activities and weaving workshops, we have created a textile sculpture that reflects our life experiences. As well as this each individual weaver will exhibit an individual piece of work. To accompany these woven works, the exhibition will showcase pieces from The Liberties Weavers archive. Bridging past and present through material storytelling. Our project highlights the intersections of craft, storytelling, and social engagement. It centers the role of women in craft, acknowledging the historical undervaluing of textile labor in Dublin 8 and celebrating the resilience, skill, and creativity of those who have sustained these traditions.

By foregrounding the lived experiences of those involved, The Story in The Woven aims to create a space where heritage is not just remembered but actively woven into contemporary life.
