Cabbage Garden

Cabbage Garden

In 1649, the land the Cabbage Patch currently sits on was rented by some soldiers from local land owner, Philip Fernley. The land was used to grow cabbages, giving the space its name.

In 1666 the Lady's Chapel at St. Patrick's Cathedral was given to Hugeunots as a place of worship. In 1681 they leased a narrow strip of land in the Cabbage Gardens as it was known then, which was consecrated in 1685. Many of the Liberties' merchants and tradesmen were buried in the cemetery which closed to burials in 1878.

Dublin Corporation opened the burial ground as a public park in 1982.
