Walking the Franchises in the Parish of St. James
Between the 12th and 18th centuries, the Mayor and Aldermen of Dublin City 'rode the franchises' regularly to proclaim the limits of the city boundaries. The western part of their day-long journey took them from Dolphin's Barn to James's Street, Bow Bridge and the mouth of the River Camac, which they crossed by boat. This walk follows the part of the route which formed the boundary between Dublin City and Kilmainham and looks at historic sites and events which have shaped the area's identity over three centuries.
