‘The voice and the sentiments which went forth at Kilmainham’: Daniel O’Connell and Kilmainham Courthouse
At a meeting held on 30 December 1820 in the newly opened Kilmainham Courthouse, the High Sheriff of Dublin tried to force through an address of loyalty to King George IV by the freeholders of the county. Daniel O’Connell and his supporters had a different plan for the meeting, resulting in the sheriff sending in soldiers to clear the building.
For Culture Date in Dublin 8 and to mark the 250th anniversary of O’Connell’s birth, Kilmainham Gaol will be running a special tour of the Courthouse which will explore this remarkable story.
