The Liberator in Chains: Daniel O’Connell in Richmond Bridewell, 1844
From May to September 1844, the eyes of the world were on Richmond Bridewell on the South Circular Road where Daniel O’Connell and the leaders of his Repeal movement were imprisoned in the wake of the cancellation of his planned monster meeting in Clontarf.
This lecture by Brian Crowley of Kilmainham Gaol will look at how the O’Connell’s movement turned these months into a propaganda triumph which culminated in victorious procession around the city to celebrate his eventual release.
