The Grand Canal and its Goldenbridge Neighbour
11:00am - 12:30pm & 2:00pm - 3:30pm
Meet at Suir Road Luas Stop (also served by the 123 bus). From here we will look at that part of the Grand Canal route that's now filled in and explain its original purpose. Then we will walk along the canal itself almost as far as Goldenbridge Cemetery. Here you will discover the history and value of the canal as a resource before turning into the grounds of the former Richmond Barracks (site of the new 1916 Museum) to learn of its notable participation during the struggle for Irish independence. We will finish in the atmospheric Goldenbridge Graveyard, the oldest non-denominational cemetery in the country.
