THE GRAND CANAL AND SOME REMARKABLE DUBLIN 8 NEIGHBOURS
SATURDAY 18TH MAY
1:30PM - 3PM
SUNDAY 19TH MAY
3PM - 4:30PM
We might take the Grand Canal for granted but it was once one of the engineering wonders of 18th century Ireland. From our start point we will look at that part of the Grand Canal route that's now filled in and explain its original purpose. Then we will walk along the canal itself to appreciate its construction before arriving almost as far as Goldenbridge Cemetery. Here you will discover the history and value of the canal as a resource before turning into the grounds of the Richmond Barracks 1916 Museum to learn of the former military installation's history and fateful involvement during and after the Rising of 1916. We will finish in the atmospheric Golden Bridge Graveyard, the oldest non-denominational cemetery in the country.
*Both tours begin at Suir Road Luas Stop (also served by the 123 bus).
